Prologue – The House of Light

A vast crowd had gathered, packed tight within the walls of the forecourt of the House of Light. About them there swirled a frantic edge, one pressing close to panic. A loud rumble of voices rolled through the courtyard, bouncing from the high red walls and rising up into the sky above, voices arguing, debating, pleading, feeding off of each other and heightening the fear that touched each one there. Whether dressed as rich noble or humble labourer, whether Hajanri or one of the subject races of the Empire, all were united by the moment, prejudices forgotten in the face of troubles.

In the Lair of the Bloody Handed – Part One

It struck Nhaqosa as somewhat funny how things could change. Not the little, everyday things, but the big ones, like how one moment you could be standing in snow and ice with the bitter cold whipping at you, and the next find yourself elsewhere, in this instant that being a steaming jungle, with all around them a wall of verdant growth, and an air that hung suffocating through heat and moisture. And before that it had been deserts, just as hot, but drier, and devoid of any life.

Hanetsi, Sun Queen of Metsheput, looked on with wide eyes. A chill had settled upon her slender limbs, one that neither cloak nor blazing fire could dispel. She could see that she was not alone in that condition. All along the lines of her gathered army that self same fear had taken hold.

Chapter 8 – At The Ridge

Dawn had broken by the time they reached the range of hills that marked where the desert wastes ended. The ride during the rest of the night had passed uneventfully. They had spotted no riders, and no other people until they neared the hills. Men, some on horseback and others on foot, moved around the hills, following trails that criss-crossed it, leading to openings cut into the side of them. The entrance to the mines saw steady traffic as miners began their working day, scraping away deep beneath the ground seeking out the sparkle of frozen fire that would mark a find of opal.

Ray and the Alien Princesses – Part Four

The interior of the base was much larger than Brian had expected, being a labyrinth of corridors and rooms far too large for the needs of just seven women. The only other movement he saw was from the odd android rattling along corridors, no two of which were alike. The interior itself was a little strange as well, and a bit off putting. The walls and ceilings and floors were slightly out of alignment so that it bent sight askew, while the doors were shaped vaguely like mushrooms, bulbous at the top but thinning below. Each door was marked by writing, a strange and disturbing script in a language unknown, and Brian was sure that he didn’t want to know it either.

Dreams of Days to Come – Part Four

With all the cunning grace possessed by a stalking panther, Peregrine led her small band of hand picked men through the shrouding confines of the jungles, following paths little used and harder to pick out. They made barely a sound as they walked, placing each foot with care so as not to disturb fallen twigs and branches and give away their presence. Arrows were nocked to bowstrings as narrowed eyes swept the dense foliage all around, seeking out any sign of the wild men in whose home they were trespassing.

Chapter 7 – Swords in the Moonlight

Amaran and Kathri rode slowly across the desert beneath the light of the moons. The red moon was growing both in size and luminous though remained far from completing its erratic course through the heavens, one that would culminate in it eclipsing the white moon in both size and brightness. For its part, the white moon still held dominance, even if it was beginning to wan.

Ray and the Alien Princesses – Part Three

“Hello captain.” The alien woman’s voice was sultry and seductive, accentuated by her soft tones. “We always welcome visitors that drop by, though few do so quite so literally.”

The deep echo of drums thrummed their way through the dark, steamy corners of the shrouding jungle. Thick vines hung down from the tight packed trees, so closely woven that they formed a veil through which barely an arm span ahead could be seen. Roots writhed in the black soils, heavy laden with mosses and bright fungi of a multitude of hues. Heat clung like a spider to everything, a moist heat that could rot the flesh and the mind of any ill disposed to it.

Chapter 6 – Games, Songs and Tales

Kathri rose up out of her sleep, brought back by the soft surge of the song that pulsed through her, one in rhythm with the beat of her heart. She opened her eyes, looking up once more at the purple and white strips of the tent she had first woken up in. Nothing had changed since her previous time there. Her pack and the figurine still sat where they had previous, while the silver bowl had been refilled with water.
