Nights of Fire – Part Five

The search for a campsite for the night brought them to a ridge that jutted out into the forest from the foothills of the mountains they were headed towards. They clambered up it, out above the bulk of the forest, and there they sheltered for the night among a small stand of windswept trees. The night’s sky once more opened forth with the brilliant display of lights and colours that they had seen the previous night. The illuminance of the scintillating colours was, if anything, more intense than that of the night before.

The distance to the spires from where they had espied it closed but slowly, even despite the hurried pace they made towards it, and likewise did the distance to their pursuers narrow. The race as to would reach their goal first was one too hard to judge, for it would be a close run thing, and so they laboured on as the heat and sand scourged them. Kharjii, once so resigned to his fate, now urged his men on to greater efforts, for fear now drove him on. Death in the deserts was not a prospect he relished, as thirst and heat wracked and devoured the body, yet it remained preferable to the horrors that Barazi would inflict upon them should they be taken alive.

Prologue – An Ancient Stone

The jangle of a horse’s harness rang through the airy woods, echoing among the tall silver barked trees and up to the broad canopy above. It mingled with the calls of many birds and the sigh of the branches as they swayed in a gentle breeze. A white horse, sleek and powerful, picked its way through the woods, the sound of its hooves mostly muffled by the lush green grass that grew beneath the trees. A tall, black skinned man rode the horse, one with silvered hair that hung long and free, metallic in nature and not the sign of age, for he appeared young despite it. Sharp eyes of iron looked out from a narrow face, taking in all around him with a piercing gaze.

A tangled passage of growth lay ahead, interspersed by swift flowing streams of freezing water that cut through the forest, running fast across beds of smooth worn stones. They lost all sense of direction in the maze of foliage beneath the thick canopy, unable to pick out any markers in the distance. Their only guide to keep them on the path they wished to follow came from the pendant that hung around Nhaqosa’s neck, tugging them along the direction they needed to head.

Driven sands whipped across the arid, hard baked earth. Scorching desert winds caught up the sand and bore it aloft, whirling them in scourging blasts across the dozen ragged figures that made their way across a region where, as far as one could see, nothing lived. They walked with slow and belaboured step across terrain littered with shattered boulders and raw earth, upon which had settled coarse grains of sand. The sun broiled above, and is lash was just as cruel as the scourge of driven sand, flaying at the travellers. All about, the land shimmered in the haze of the heat, the horizon blending into the empty sky.

Having to crawl through the restricted tunnel while holding the torch proved difficult going. It only lasted a short while though, no more than a couple of minutes, before she came to the end of the tunnel, where it sloped down to another drop, down into another tunnel below. Peering down through the hole, Kathri could see another light, one natural in origin. Relief swept over her at the sight of it.

The scintillating display that blazed across the sky continued late on into the night, smothered as clouds once more began rolling in. Dawn arrived with a light snow falling, a dusting of it settling upon the hills.

Peregrine pounded on down the tunnel, intent only on reaching the fleeing hermit ahead. She could make out a baleful red light bobbling along and the shadowy outline of the hermit as he fled. The darkened tunnels were cramped, forcing her to run in part at a crouch. Whether they were natural formed or man made she could not tell.

Kathri’s head was throbbing when she woke, waves of pain pulsating through it like tides upon the shore. A light filtered down from above, mostly blocked by the slab of stone above her. It had been too large to fit fully in the chasm and had instead become lodged in it just above her. She reached up with a shaky hand and touched the surface of it, her fingertips just able to reach. A little smaller and it would have been the end of me.

The weather closed in on around them. The breeze picked up to a wind that howled across the barren hill slopes with a knife like intensity, shredding through their clothes as if they were mere tattered rags, to chill them to the core. Even Nhaqosa, born as he had been in colder climes and graced with a thick hide, felt it. In his mind, the cause of it had been the long years spent in hotter lands, to which he had become acclimatised.
